Questions and answers
A pillow's job is to keep your head and neck in line with your spine. The right pillow depends on how you sleep, the width of your shoulders, and how far you sink into your mattress.
What is an organic pillow?
An organic pillow is made from certified natural materials, such as organic latex and organic cotton, rather than synthetic foam or polyester fill. It supports your head and neck without the petroleum-based chemicals, off-gassing, or added flame retardants found in most conventional pillows.
Which pillow is best for side sleepers?
It depends on your shoulder width. Side sleepers with broad shoulders do best with the Forma, which has a higher height to fill the space between your shoulder and your head. Side sleepers with standard shoulders do best with the Ergonomic, which supports your neck and keeps your head level without lifting it too high. If you prefer a pillow you can shape, the Cloud Luxe, Classic, and Comfort let you shift the fill to add height where you need it. Your mattress matters too: the deeper you sink in, the less height you need.
How do I choose a pillow for my sleep position?
- Side sleepers with broad shoulders: Forma Noir or Forma Beyond Latex®
- Side sleepers with standard shoulders: Ergonomic Noir or Ergonomic Beyond Latex®
- Back sleepers: Ergonomic for contoured neck support, or the Sofi if you prefer a low, slim pillow
- Combination sleepers: Comfort Latex or Classic Beyond Latex®, which you can reshape as you move between positions
- Stomach sleepers: Sofi pillow is perfect low profile
If you’d rather not have a contoured shape, the Cloud Luxe gives you a traditional pillow feel you can shape to any position. The Pillow Bar quiz matches you based on your position, shoulder width, and mattress.

Can I return a pillow?
Because pillows are personal items, all pillow sales are final. Every Essentia pillow is covered by a one-year warranty against defects in material or workmanship.

How do I wash the GOTS cover?
A little care goes a long way in keeping your pillow feeling fresh, supportive, and oh-so-cozy. Our GOTS-certified soft organic cotton cover is easy to remove and wash, helping you maintain optimal freshness without compromising the pillow's integrity.
Follow these simple care instructions to enjoy truly clean, organic sleep every night.
- Remove & Wash the Cover — Carefully unzip and remove the organic cotton cover. Machine wash the cover in cold water on a gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the cover's organic fibers.
- Dry the Cover Gently — Since organic cotton is sensitive to high heat, it’s best to air dry the cotton cover to prevent any shrinking. You can lay it flat or use the dryer on an air fluff or low/no-heat setting. Make sure the cover is completely dry before putting it back on your pillow to avoid any moisture build-up.
- Spot Clean the Inner Pillow — The latex core itself should not be machine-washed or submerged in water. If you need to clean the inner pillow or its thin liner, use a damp cloth to spot clean any soiled areas. Gently dab (don’t soak), and then allow the pillow to air out until fully dry. This will freshen the pillow without harming the natural latex.
Does my mattress change which pillow I need?
Yes. The right pillow on the wrong mattress won’t keep you aligned, and neither will the right mattress with the wrong pillow. The deeper you sink into your mattress, the smaller the space between your shoulder and your head, so you need less pillow height. If you sleep more on top of your mattress than in it, you may need more height as a side sleeper, or a slimmer pillow like the Sofi as a back sleeper.
What is the difference between contour and classic pillows?
Contour pillows, like the Forma, the Ergonomic, and Sofi, are molded into a fixed shape. Every curve, slope, and ripple is engineered to support your neck, keep your head aligned, and leave room around your head for airflow.
Classic pillows, like the Cloud Luxe, Classic, and Comfort, are filled with loose pieces of latex you can shift and fluff to create the shape you want. They’re more versatile across sleep positions.
The Cloud Luxe is the only pillow offered in 2 sizes, queen or king, and all other pillows are one size because they would simply be too heavy in larger sizes.
What makes Essentia pillows organic? GOLS vs GOTS
GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certifies the latex inside the pillow, from the plantation to the finished product. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies the fabric of the cover. Together, they cover everything you rest your head on. Every pillow in the our organic pillow collection is made with certified organic latex and has zero fiber fill: no polyester, no wool, and nothing that attracts dust mites.
What is the difference between Noir and Beyond Latex?
It comes down to feel. Noir pillows are made with our Black Quartz latex, which is lighter and more responsive, giving you a cushioned feel with gentle pushback. Beyond Latex® pillows use our highest-density latex, which responds slowly and molds to your neck and head for a full, cradling, near-weightless feel. Beyond Latex® pillows are also heavier, so they stay in place. You’ll notice Noir pillows are perforated and Beyond Latex® pillows are solid. The perforations aren’t for cooling. Both materials regulate temperature because of their formulas, so neither will make you sleep hot.
How does organic latex compare to memory foam?
Memory foam is made from petroleum-based polyurethane and tends to hold heat. Our Beyond Latex® relieves pressure and spreads out weight the way memory foam does, while regulating temperature. Our organic latex adds natural resilience, so your pillow supports your neck instead of flattening under it. Because every pillow is solid or loose-fill latex with no fiber fill, it keeps its shape far longer than fiber pillows.
What is the healthiest, non-toxic pillow filling?
Certified organic latex is widely considered one of the cleanest fillings available. It contains no polyurethane, flame retardant chemicals, or synthetic fill, so there is nothing to off-gas, and natural latex naturally resists mold, mildew, and dust mites.
Why Organic Pillows Matter
Most pillows on the market are built from polyurethane foam, polyester fill, or shredded synthetic blends. These materials are inexpensive to produce, but they come with trade-offs that show up while you sleep. Synthetic foams can release volatile organic compounds, the same off-gassing responsible for that chemical smell on a brand-new pillow. Over time, synthetic fill also breaks down, flattens, and becomes a comfortable home for dust mites and allergens.
An organic pillow solves this at the source. Made from natural, plant-based latex rather than petroleum, it supports your neck without introducing chemicals into the air you breathe for eight hours a night. For anyone managing allergies, asthma, sensitive skin, or simply a preference for cleaner materials, the difference is not cosmetic. It is the difference between a pillow that adds to your daily chemical load and one that does not. Natural latex is also biodegradable and harvested from renewable Hevea rubber trees, unlike the petroleum-based foams bound for a landfill.
The Toxic Chemicals Hiding in Conventional Pillows
It helps to know exactly what you are avoiding. Conventional memory foam and synthetic pillows have been linked to compounds including formaldehyde, benzene, naphthalene, and isocyanates, several of which can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Polyurethane foam, the base of most memory foam pillows, is petroleum-derived and can off-gas for weeks after purchase. Flame retardant chemicals are another common addition, applied so products meet flammability standards, and studies have noted their tendency to build up in the body over time. A pillow is something you press your face into for years, which makes the material worth scrutinizing. An organic latex pillow sidesteps this list entirely, with no polyurethane, no added flame retardant chemistry, and no synthetic fill to off-gas in the first place.
Premium Organic Materials, Certified to the Core
Not every pillow labelled natural is genuinely organic, which is why certification matters more than marketing language. Every Essentia organic latex pillow is engineered from our patented Beyond Latex® organic foam and organic latex blends are GOLS certified organic and rooted in Canada.
The certifications tell you what a label alone cannot. GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard, verifies that the latex itself is genuinely organic from harvest to finished foam. GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, covers the organic cotton cover that sits against your skin. Together they confirm the pillow is organic through and through. You can see the full breakdown on our certifications page.
Beyond Latex® is where Essentia differs from every other latex pillow. It is the only organic foam engineered to deliver the slow-response, pressure-relieving feel people love about memory foam, with the natural support of traditional latex, and without any of the petrochemicals. There is a health benefit built in as well. Essentia's Beyond Latex organic foam is impervious to dust mites, confirmed by independent testing at Johns Hopkins, so the surface closest to your face all night is one the most common household allergen cannot inhabit.
